Welcome to Vocabulary of the Body! My name is Shayda Kafai. I am a lecturer in the Ethnic and Women’s Studies department at California Polytechnic University, Pomona and as a queer, disabled woman of color, I am committed to exploring the different ways we can reclaim our bodies from intersecting systems of oppression.

I blog about how our media replicates stereotypes about the body. By calling attention to these subtle (and sometimes very direct) messages, I hope that we can cultivate more intersectional and accepting conversations about our bodies and our experiences. Even more radically, by questioning culture perhaps we can begin to shift the power and privilege we ascribe to certain bodies and the disposability we ascribe to others.

  2. Hey Shayda,
I’m not sure if you’re into the whole blog awards thing, but I nominated you for a Beautiful Blogger award. You do some awesome work here, so I just wanted to say, “thanks.” I put a little about it on my latest post: http://homeworkdad.wordpress.com/2012/06/17/id-like-to-thank-the-academy/

    Have a great weekend!
